Supporting Therapists in the North East: The Story Behind Our Network

When Louise & I first imagined Therapy Network North East, it was not about launching something big or formal. It was simply about people. We wanted a place where counsellors, psychologists and psychotherapists in our region could come together, share ideas and feel part of something bigger than themselves.

As with many things it all began with a chance conversation, for our story it was during a training day; attended by therapists from across the North East. We all had different modalities, workplaces and training institutions, however we were all in agreement on how isolated we felt working in the North East. It was here our Facebook page was born, with Louise (and all her tech savvyness) leading the charge. However, an online presence wasn’t enough and I personally still felt quite disconnected from my colleagues. So I found myself in supervision, where I was lamenting about the sheer isolation in this profession for not only me but my peers and the lack of community. It was at that point my supervisor looked at me and said: create it Kate! So one zoom call with Louise later a plan had been set.

We wanted to create a space that felt supportive and welcoming, a place where conversations could flow, support given and even friendships made. No pressure, all modalities, no competition; just colleagues gathering together to share, reflect and encourage each other.

Since starting the network, I have been reminded again and again of why this matters. Every time we meet, the room fills with a nervous anticipation, which gives way to noise. People relax, they start talking, and before long the space is buzzing with stories, laughter and thoughtful exchange. It is amazing how quickly connections form when we are with people who truly understand the work we do; in fact the conversations continue out the door after the event.

What has been most powerful for me is the feeling of being part of a team. I've been given book recommendations (yes an occupational hazard!), restaurant recommendations and events to attend.

Even though many of us work in different ways and settings, we are all united by our commitment to supporting others. Having a circle of colleagues I can call upon has been invaluable. Whether it is for advice, encouragement or simply to share an idea, I know there are people who will listen and respond with warmth and understanding.

I have also been struck by the creativity that emerges in these gatherings. When therapists come together, the conversation naturally sparks new ways of thinking. Hearing the guest speakers discussing their work and what inspires them has been illumining and inspiring; the insight into others work is fascinating.

What I value most is the spirit of openness. It does not matter whether you are newly qualified or have decades of experience, whether you are in private practice or working in an organisation. Everyone has something to offer, and everyone has something to gain. That sense of equality and shared purpose is what makes the network special.

Over time, we've learned that small details matter when creating a space that feels welcoming, such as greeting each and every attendee with gratitude for showing up; for themselves and being part of a community. Louise and I work together behind the scenes fitted in around our practices; as we are both passionate about the Network and love being a part of something bigger.

We have been asked why we charge for tickets; and simply it is for keeping the network alive, for maintaining our website and mailing list, to paying for the venue and refreshments for each meetup. What really matters is the conversation, the shared ideas, and the simple comfort of knowing you are part of a community that understands the work you do.

If you are a therapist working in the North East and you have ever wished for a space to share ideas, meet colleagues and feel part of a supportive team, you are warmly invited to join us.
